Lincoln County Robotics at Tennessee State Competition!
I am so proud of this team. They competed in 10 qualification matches and finals in two days. Nate drove well and listened to his teammates. Emerson worked hard on the programming and helping his team. Lexi helped lead the team through interviews and kept them on track. Rylie volunteered to be a field re setter and she reset the playing field for 80 qualification matches and final rounds. Sadie scouted other teams for us. Andrew and Jonathan were amazing mentors for these kids! Our team finished 11th in the state! I highlighted some numbers. They finished 4th in offensive playing and 5th in their contribution to winning! Our coach, Ms. Marty won the teacher of the year award!

STEDTRAIN at the 2022 WhistleStop Festival
2022 WhistleStop Festival held on September 9 and 10 at Huntsville's John Hunt Park included the EarlyWorks STEM Tinker Tent that featured an array of hand-on activities to entertain and educate children. Two of STEDTRAIN's teachers, Mrs. Holly Whitt and Ms. Marty LeBlanc, participated by showing off STEM projects that were funded with 2021-22 STEDTRAIN grants.
Lori Nelson Retires
STEDTRAIN received this email from a teacher who has won a Seed Grant every year for at least the last 11 years, which is when our online data-basing system began. Her school has been awarded $9,861 over those years to support her STEM projects. She is retiring at the end of the school year, so she was letting us know why she wasn’t submitting a proposal this year. Of course we recruited her to join the STEDTRAIN committee after she completes her final Seed Grant on April 30, 2022.

Mr. Woodrow (Woody) Williams
With deep regret, we must announce the passing of Mr. Woodrow (Woody) Williams on Tuesday, 15 February 2022 at 2:15 pm in a traffic accident just south of the Tennessee River Bridge. Woody has been the public face of STEDTRAIN for many years. His sudden passing will impact everyone who has participated in STEDTRAIN, but this tragedy will not derail the program he loved so much. Mr. Paul Agarwal has been shadowing Woody for many months to learn the nuances of the program and to be in a position to take over if needed. Paul is now the Vice Chair of the STEDTRAIN Committee. Ron Hackett will continue to run the website and records administration. We will continue to accept Seed Grant proposals for the 2022-23 school year, and the deadline remains 1 April at midnight. We look forward to funding many proposals this year as a tribute to Woody and his years of dedicated service to STEDTRAIN and the community.Jennifer Whitt 2021 MCSS Principal of the Year
From MCSS Superintendent Allen Perkins - July 22, 2021 Madison County School Superintendent Allen Perkins is pleased to announce Mrs. Jennifer Whitt, principal at Sparkman Middle School, as the 2021 Madison County School System’s Principal of the Year. Whitt grew up in Madison County and attended Harvest Elementary, eventually graduating from Sparkman High School. “Jennifer Whitt is a dynamic, creative and caring leader. She has assembled an incredible team at Sparkman Middle. She gives 100% every single day and that’s why her peers and district leadership selected her as Principal of the Year,” stated Allen Perkins, Superintendent Madison County Schools. “It is an honor to be recognized by such an outstanding group of principals from Madison County. I’m also honored that our district leadership put their trust in me as well. A huge thank you to all of them and to the incredibly talented and driven faculty and staff at Sparkman Middle. None of this would be possible without them,” Whitt added. Whitt has 24 years in education with 22 of those at Sparkman Middle. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and also an Education Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership from the University of West Alabama. Sparkman Middle is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School of Excellence and was recently named a Model PLC School, the FIRST MIDDLE SCHOOL IN ALABAMA to receive this distinction.Meritorious Achievement Award in Pre-University Education - Lori Nelson - 2020 EAB Awards

Pamela Renee Berry
Pamella Renee Berry, 62, of Gurley, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2020. I met and interfaced with her as a Data Librarian on the Arsenal. I convinced her to join our STEDTRAIN K-12 Grant Program Committee for years. Later she became a Librarian in Gurley at Madison County Elementary School with a strong drive to introduce computer technology, research, and presentation skills to the students. She wrote successful STEDTRAIN Grant Proposals over several years as a Lead Teacher and as an Assistant Teacher to other Lead Teachers. - Woody Williams Read Pamela's Obituary

Good morning, Mrs. Hale! I am SO excited about receiving a STEDTRAIN grant, but I can hardly control the excitement of my students! Some of our items purchased with grant funds are beginning to be delivered, and it's like Christmas whenever someone brings a box to my room!
Of course you are welcome to come visit anytime, but you would probably get more of the idea of the overall project if you waited until 2nd semester. Most of the items we are adding to our "makerspace" take some time to learn how to use. We do plan on having two "maker faires", one probably in January and the other at the end of the school year, to showcase what we have accomplished to parents, fellow teachers and students, and community members. I will be sure to let you know of those dates, and I welcome you and other STEDTRAIN members to join us.
Please extend my sincere thank you to the rest of the committee. It is difficult to express in words the impact this grant will have on my students. While our objectives are difficult to measure in standard ways, just watching and listening to the students is evidence of authentic learning taking place. I can't wait to see how far these students will take their ideas!
Thank you again for your support of unique learning opportunities! I look forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,
Teresa Zimmer
