Growing Great Kids is Mind "Bog" gling is a project in which the students of our school will participate in designing and building a bog garden, a butterfly garden, and a weather station in our certified Alabama Outdoor Classroom. The students from all grades K-8 will make scientific observations in these areas and present their data and conclusions to the school.

CO2 Dragster Derby
Students will design, construct, build, and finish a CO2 cartridge-powered dragster that can travel up to 60 mph from a block of wood. Other area science teachers classes will be constructing similar cars to specific specifications and will meet for a county-wide dragster derby. Several science concepts (aerodynamics, force, speed, velocity, acceleration, friction, thrust, drag, density, Newton's Laws, momentum, etc.) are taught through this project as well as other skills (woodworking, art, paint techniques, critical thinking, cooperation, experimental design, organization, planning, etc).

Roller Coaster Physics
Students in physics and engineering will create their own segment of a roller coaster involving loops and hills. They will apply the conservation of energy equation to calculate velocity and then run cars on the track while using the equipment to measure velocity. Students will be able to verify that energy is conserved.

Student Teams for Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC)
Westlawn Middle School will form three teams (boys, girls, and Hispanic) to learn about designing and building model rockets to compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) sponsored by AIAA. Teams will design rockets using SpaceCAD4, build rockets, and fly them in an attempt to qualify for a national fly off.

Harnessing the Sun
Harnessing the sun is a project in which teams of 5th and 6th graders will build a solar cell, connect it to a load, and monitor on a daily basis to determine how much power is produced thus offering the possibility of lowering the carbon footprint of users of this inexhaustable source of power.

The Wonder of Weather
The Wonder of Weather is a project in which small groups of students will gather and interpret weather data, participate in a variety of hands-on activities, and produce a daily weather report video. The project is geared primarily toward 5th grade students. However, children enrolled in the Extended Day Program (grades K-6) will also participate in the project. Due to the durable nature of the items being purchased with the grant funds, this will be an ongoing project that can continue for many years without incurring substantial costs to replenish consumable items.

RAPPI NG TO MATH FACTS MASTERY
Rapping to Math Facts Mastery is a project to encourage mastery of multiplication facts in grades 3,4,and 5 by using Rap multiplication CD's. Each classroom teacher will address multiplication deficits by using the Multiplication Rap CD's to promote mastery of facts in the classroom and at home.

Making Math Magnificent with Centers
Making Math Magnificent with Centers is a project to change the way our teachers teach math in the classroom. They will change from using the textbook to using hands-on manipulatives. Each teacher will incorporate hands-on math centers into the math curriculum by using the materials from this grant. A lesson will be taught at teacher table with individualized instruction and then the students will break into groups or partners and work with center manipulatives.

Hunting Down the Assassins
"Hunting Down the Assassins" is a project in which students planning to enter the medical field postgraduation will conduct in-depth investigation into the nature of bacterial pathogens. Student will learn the techniques and the underlying theories used to identify pathogenic bacteria and apply that knowledge to the control and treatment of disease.

Say "Cheese" For Knowledge
The students at our school have been building an Outdoor Wildlife Habitat that encompasses our entire campus. A few of the main focus areas are a waterfall / pond, wildlife habitats, dry creek bed, reading retreat, and raised bed and hydroponics vegetable gardens. In order to learn about habitats, animals, and plant life cycles, students will be able to capture different wildlife activities and stages of growth on film in order to produce still pictures. The use of this camera's zoom lens feature will allow students to get up close with the animals without disturbing their habitat.

Technology for Trail Trekkers
The current "Green Revolution" is a modern day call to action, a warning perhaps that declares that what we don't know first-hand and understand, we won't care to protect and preserve. It is this very mantra that drives environmental education on a national level, encouraging both educators and students alike, to "get outside" and extend the walls of the traditional classroom. For in doing this, we make the world the classroom and become lifelong learners and caretakers of the Earth. Huntsville City Schools shares this vision, supporting the Earthscope program for over 30 years.

Tapping Hidden Potential
Tapping Hidden Potential is a pilot project involving the use of a set of handheld learning tools called Renaissance Responders which allow interactive and engaging classroom participation. More and more often educators are serving students who require different methods of learning. Therein lies an untapped layer of success among our students. We need to find methods of uncovering this success and encouraging it. Our project will study the use of these tools in the pilot classrooms and measure the success of these tools in test performances.

Journey North: Using Tulip Gardens to Track the Arrival of Spring Across North America
In fall 2010 our 5th grade students will plant a Journey North Tulip Garden so we can proclaim the official arrival of Spring in Toney, Alabama. By sharing our observations over the Internet with other schools across North America we will follow the wave of spring as it moves northward and measure its pace from distant places. Our students will investigate the relationship between geography, climate, and the arrival of spring as these plants reveal the effects of climate factors through growth and development.

Collaborative Science Experience
The Collaborative Science Experience is a project that will allow students to participate in a cooperative science internet research project. While working in groups of 3-4, the students will extensively research one standard of the Physical Science subsection of the Science Alabama Course of Study. The groups will then create a PowerPoint Presentation on their science standard. To accompany the PowerPoint, the students will create ten test questions based on question stems from the state mandated assessment, and a hands-on activity.

Through the Looking Glass: Using Technology to Explore Our World
"Through the Looking Glass: Using Technology to Explore Our World" is a project which uses microscopes, a webcam, and an online educational game service to enhance 5th grade students' learning of life science. Needed materials for this project include a set of microscopes, a set of prepared slides, a computer camera, and a Quia subscription. The students will learn how to use the microscope to examine slides. They will share their knowledge with other students using Skype, and will practice the concepts using interactive games on the Activeboard.

Math in Motion
To address the current deficit in math problem-solving scores at Providence K-8 school, the "Math in Motion" cart will provide teachers with the resources to create a regular, daily or weekly lesson in math problem solving. Math in Motion will consist of a cart with an Elmo document camera and a projector to facilitate the teacher's ability to provide students with visual aids, hands-on lesson materials such as Rubic's cubes to teach algorithms as a concept, and Math Olympiad lesson materials. The motility of a cart will allow teachers to access these resource quickly and conveniently.

Sherlock Bones is a lab activity in which students will become familiar with lab techniques for analyzing bones from an unknown subject. Students will work in groups to determine the sex, height, race, and approxiamte age of an unknown subject based on the sample bones provided.

Exploring Science Concepts through Learning Centers
Using learning centers that are integrated across the curriculum fosters a learning environment that seeks to deepen the knowledge of students rather than cover the surface of a topic. Teaching Science through Learning Centers is a project that will integrate math, literacy, and science while students take charge of their learning as hands-on learning centers. These learning centers will be built around the Alabama Course of Study content standards and AMSTI science modules taught in my Kindergarten classroom.

Where in Davis Hills Is It?
The objective of this project is to motivate and excite students at Davis Hills School using technology to Geocashe. With this technology students will both plant and locate hidden cashes by utilizing GPS coordinates to describe the world in spatial terms. Using satellite tracking, maps, major physical features, urban and rural patterns, students will learn to compile data, organize data, follow directions, and problem solve. Geography and spatial thinking have traditionally been a weak area for our students. This project will strengthen students' skills in math, science, and geography.

Science on the "Big Screen"
Promoting children's knowledge of science is a priority of Arab Primary School. Students receive 30 minutes of science instruction weekly in the science lab at APS. The project, Science on the "Big Screen," would enhance the science curriculum by enabling students to observe science topics from the internet as well as view microbes and other items of interest using a digital microscope via a projector and screen. This addition to the science lab would benefit over 500 students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade year after year.

Beyond the Bubble - Using Active Technology for Student Expression
Beyond the Bubble crosses grades and abilities. ActivExpressions, remote devices that allow students to answer multiple choice and free response questions, would be the center of this project. Students in 4th and 5th grade gifted classes will use the technology to develop lessons and quizzes that they can use to teach other students. Students in 4th grade special education math classes will use the technology daily in their math lessons with the ActivBoard, Interactive Whiteboard. Additionally, the ActivExpressions will be available for use with all the boards in the building (currently 5).

Students for a SMART Future
"Students for a SMART Future" is a new initiative at St. John the Baptist Catholic School to integrate technology into the classroom. St. John's has invested in new SMART Board technology for two classrooms. The SMART Board is an interactive, electronic whiteboard which enhances instruction and learning. This multimedia tool engages students with each other and their teachers to achieve academic success and improve technical skills. The school seeks grant funding to purchase the student interactive remotes to complement the current whiteboard technology.

Brain Connections will involve all Greengate School students in learning grade level concepts that align with state and national standards in Science. Students will be allowed concrete experiences working with brain science concepts to learn about how the brain works, to understand the differences in how the dyslexic brain works and learn how to use their brain more effectively.

MAGICAL MATH --SCIENCE AND READING TOO!
The project will involve all students in hands-on and virtual math on a daily basis, as well as integrate math in all subjects, primarily science and reading. Through the use of an interactive white board, students will count, graph, group, compare, contrast, sequence, etc. as well as take virtual field trips,and visit approved math, science and reading websites daily. All students will have all materials on "Wide Screen" and each child will have the opportunity to manipulate materials on the interactive board for their classmates to see and provide additional thoughts and suggestions.

Look at Me Now
Look at Me Now is a project that students in grades K-4 will participate in. This project focuses on student achievement as student work will be digitally displayed on an LCD monitor in the hallway for everyone to enjoy. Each grade level will produce documents/presentations appropriate for their grade level. Microsoft Word and PowerPoint will be used to produce "All About Me" documents (K-2) and "Snazzy Science PowerPoints" (3-4 solar system and weather phenomena)in a lab setting."Look an Me Now" allows computer lab projects to be digitally displayed in the hallway for all students to enjoy.

Happy Hands, Mathematical Minds
Happy Hands, Mathematical Minds will involve all Greengate School Students in learning grade level concepts that align with state and national standards in Math and Science. Students will be allowed concrete experiences with math manipulatives during math class. Research has shown that learning mathematical concepts first presented with hands on experiences are easily transferred to the written page and thinking processes are strengthened.

Biking on the Moon
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center sponsors the Great Moonbuggy Race each spring in April. Bob Jones High School has an engineering academy, where the third-level class is a senior project and internship course (typically in the spring). The goal would be for those seniors to design and construct a moonbuggy to compete in the race.

Exploring Science across the curriculum is a hands-on approach that involves exciting science experiments to high-interest writing projects. Lakeshore's Learning Science Activity tubs have everything teachers need to investigate 8 important science concepts. Each tub includes 40 cards with engaging, standards-based activities covering 5 core curriculum areas-from math and language to science and social studies. You also get tons of ready-to-use materials for exploring concepts in depth. Perfectly coordinated to each tub are libraries to help students investigate topics even further.

Invitation to Invent
Students will be introduced to simple machines. They will investigate force, motion and friction as they learn about the six simple machines and how they are put together to form compound machines. Students will use Lego kits to explore each of the six simple machines. Students will investigate how scientists experiment, create meaning and tell others what they have learned. Finally students will use their knowledge of simple machines to address a problem creatively and make a unique invention to solve the problem.

TeacherMate in the Classroom
TeacherMate in the Classroom is a project designed to increase literacy and mathematics skill development for K-2 students. A "TeacherMate" is a handheld, computer that utilizes interactive software to engage young learners in reading and math tasks. The TeacherMate System correlates to the core curriculum, district adopted basal math and reading series as well as state and national reading and math standards. The tasks are interactive and increase learning potential by using animation and sound. This proposed project is non-consumable and will be available to students each academic year.

Adventures in Podcasting
Adventures in Podcasting is a cross curricular project that will expose students to the world of podcasting. Students will work throughout the year to create podcasts on various curriculum topics, including math concepts, events in history, and book talks. The student created podcasts will not only be used to teach peers at Madison Cross Roads School, but they will also become part of the Gallery 360 Website, which is podcast treasury on the Alabama Learning Exchange website. This will allow teachers and students across Alabama can utilize these resources for teaching purposes.

A Promethean Activslate and the Activhub that allows it to interface with our Activstudio equipment will be purchased for use in conducting science activities to enable students to demonstrate and display ideas about science vocabulary and concepts to their peers. This technology will motivate students to ask questions and participate in the learning process. Instead of just defining vocabulary words in their notebooks, students will be challenged to think critically about the meaning of the words so they can draw and write explanations for their peers using the slate.

Extending AMSTI Science Through Thematic Units
By teaching language arts through thematic units across the curriculum we will be able to integrate broad areas of knowledge, such as mathematics and science with the teaching of the four major language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Extending AMSTI Science through Thematic Units is a project that will do just that by creating math, literacy, and science learning activities for three Kindergarten classrooms. Our themes are based on content covered in our AMSTI science kits, and the integrated learning experiences will deepen the knowledge base of our students.

Battle of the Acids and Bases
Students will explore the relationship between molar concentration of acidic and basic solutions and the pH scale.
Advanced chemistry students will learn about the differences between the conductivity characteristics and the pH measurements of strong acids and bases in contrast to weak acids and bases.
